PBA Basketball Teams Serving in Costa Rica
August 12, 2015
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish basketball programs have started their 2015-16 seasons in a unique way this month as they have both traveled to Costa Rica to serve as part of the Palm Beach Atlantic Athletic Department’s annual summer missions trip. See below as Sailfish men’s basketball head coach David Balza outlines the opening days of the trip.

The school year began a little early for the Sailfish Basketball programs. Both teams returned to campus on the 1st of August, over three weeks before classes begin. Their learning won’t take place in the classroom, however. It will take place in the mission field of Costa Rica. For the first time in school history, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Palm Beach Atlantic are taking a basketball mission trip together.
Twenty-nine student-athletes and coaches boarded flights today, looking forward to eight days abroad. From an athletic stand-point, the teams have benefitted from a nine-day mini-camp. Each team will play five games against teams from around Costa Rica over the next week. In between, the Sailfish will be doing free basketball clinics across the country. They will also be distributing basketballs and shoes they collected this past spring to disadvantaged youth in the city of San Jose. They will visit an orphanage where they will help with projects and distribute gifts that have been donated. They will attend a church where they will assist with a building project. In between, the teams will do some sightseeing and team bonding and spend time growing closer to their Lord through bible study and devotions.
“We talked about the fact that we are ambassadors,” said Balza. “We are a part of something much bigger than ourselves on this trip. We are representing PBA, the USA and our Lord and Savior. We hope the people we come into contact will get a favorable impression of us as Sailfish and Americans, and that we can witness to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. If that can happen, this trip will have been a major success.”
Fans of the Sailfish are encouraged to check back regularly for updates and to follow a number of the coaches and players on Twitter as they document this tremendous experience.
