TAMPA, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men’s soccer player Lucas Coutinho was named to the Premier Development League (PDL) Team of the Week yesterday for his performance for the Southern West Virginia King’s Warriors.
Coutinho, a native of Recife, Brazil, scored two goals and also tallied an assist in the King’s Warriors’ first two games of the season. He was one of two forwards named to PDL’s 11-man Team of the Week.
The PDL features 65 teams within four conferences throughout the United States and Canada in 2015, including 10 teams affiliated with USL PRO or Major League Soccer clubs. The PDL has proven to be an important stepping-stone for top professionals now playing throughout the world, with 70 percent of all MLS draftees having PDL experience. The PDL season consists of 14 regular season matches for each team, seven home and seven away, and provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility. In addition to league play, PDL teams compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as well as various exhibitions.
Lucas led PBA in total points in the 2014 season with 19, scoring five goals and distributing a team-high nine assists. He and the rest of the Sailfish XI will return to the pitch September 3rd against Georgian Court University.
