Sailfish Trio Brings Home Prestigious ITA Awards

SKILLMAN, N.J. – Both Palm Beach Atlantic tennis teams were well represented when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2015 award winners, with Mark Heimberger, Romain Nowaczyk and Veena Vasquez all being named as winners in prestigious categories.
Heimberger, a senior from Mexico City, Mexico, was named the South Region’s 2015 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsman and Leadership Award winner, marking the second time that a Sailfish has brought home the award on the men’s side. Luke Bolanos also won the award in 2012.
Vasquez, also in her final year for the ‘Fish, won the Arthur Ashe, Jr. award on the women’s side as well. It marks the second straight season that PBA has won the award and the third time since 2012. Jessica Wharton (’14 winner) and Natalia Trotter (’12 winner) have also won the award.
The Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. In August the national winners are honored during a special ceremony hosted by the USTA during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day inside Ashe Stadium. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
Lastly, senior Romain Nowaczyk was named the ITA Senior Player of the Year for the South Region. The Angers, France native finished his final season in the blue and white with a 16-5 singles record while combining for a 19-6 record in doubles.
