WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball squeaked out a 2-1 victory in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) South Region tournament over No. 2 seed Shorter University at Rubin Park on Friday night, ensuring a spot in the regional championship Saturday afternoon.
Shorter played as the home team thanks to a coin toss and struck first against starter Tyler Scheuer (Win, 5-2) in the third inning. On the flip side, Hawks’ starter Colton Cross (Loss, 2-7) was dealing, having retired the first 11 batters he faced and allowing just two walks through four innings.
PBA struck in the top of the fifth when sophomore Peter Rivera started the game off with a double down the left field line. After being replaced by Eddie Vicinanza on the base paths, the rookie stole third on a ball in the dirt and set up an exciting sequence of events. Fellow freshman Ryan Johnson laid down a bunt that the pitcher fielded, but his glove-toss to the plate was too late to catch a speeding Vicinanza.
With Julian Bilodeau replacing Johnson on the base paths, Bilodeau took second on a wild pitch and set up one last heroic opportunity for the ‘Fish. Freshman Jake Summey smacked a single back up the middle to plate the go-ahead run and put PBA up 2-1.
After giving up seven hits through the first four innings, Scheuer buckled down and baffled the Shorter hitters, retiring 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.
The victory for the Sailfish advances them to the NCCAA South Regional Championship game Saturday afternoon at 2 pm, where they will take on the winner of Shorter and Toccoa Falls, who play tomorrow morning at 11 am.
