CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic traveled south to take on Division I opponent Florida International University on Wednesday night, and the host Panthers greeted the Sailfish rudely with a dominating 18-5 victory at the FIU Baseball Field.
Things started well for the ‘Fish, scoring a run in the first inning thanks to an infield RBI single by Brian Walker that scored Sean Visconti. The game quickly went downhill as the Panthers responded with a two-spot in their half of the first and would go on to put up crooked numbers in six of the next seven innings.
PBA made one last effort in the sixth frame, plating three runs thanks to work from the bottom part of the order. Jason Webb and Andrew Calderone started the inning off with a single and double respectively, and Jorge Bravo came through with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 10-4. Two batters later Pat Kane followed through with a two-out single that plated Bravo for Palm Beach Atlantic’s final run.
For the night, three Sailfish finished the game with two-hit games. Visconti and Walker put together 2-for-4 performances and Calderone went 2-for-3.
The night’s game marked the first time since 1994 that FIU and PBA did battle.
Palm Beach Atlantic returns to action on Friday night when they welcome Florida Tech to Rubin Park for the opening of a three-game set, beginning at 6 pm.
