WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team continued their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon as they took on Northwood University at Simpson Field for a double-header. After hanging on for a 5-4 win in game one the ‘Fish delivered an easier win in game two as they knocked off the Seahawks 6-1 and improved their season record to 32-19.
The team now has four games remaining in the regular season as they will take on Rollins College on Saturday, April 25th for Senior Day at Simpson Field followed by a road date at Nova Southeastern University on Friday, May 1st. If the team is victorious in their final four games they will match their best win total in program history from 2010 when they finished 36-13.
The opening game saw junior right-hander Rachel Hill (Win, 17-2) go the first six innings in the circle before handing the ball off to freshman Jana Wagner (Save, 2) for the final three outs.
PBA jumped ahead early with a run in the first and three more in the second inning to stake Hill to an early advantage.
Victoria Gonzalez drove home the game’s first run with a RBI single in the opening inning while Kayla Knight and Devin Williams each produced run-scoring hits during the three-run second frame.
With Northwood (14-26-1) chipping away with single runs in the third and fifth innings respectively the ‘Fish answered back with a key insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as junior Theresa Butler and sophomore Shelby Wood produced back-to-back two-out doubles.
NU drew closer in the top of the seventh with two runs off Hill but Wagner entered in relief and retired the side for the PBA win.
Knight continued her red hot-hitting of late by producing her third straight three hit contest as she went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Butler finished 2-for-3 with a run scored of her own.
Hill managed two strikeouts while walking three and scattering eight hits in her six innings of work.
Tuesday’s second game of the evening once again saw the ‘Fish score early and often as they poured on two runs each in the first two frames. They led 4-1 after three innings of play and then pushed the game to 6-1 with two more in the fourth.
After the first run of the game came home courtesy of a Northwood error Gonzalez followed with a RBI single to put the Sailfish on top 2-0.
Karina Langer started the second inning rally with a one-out single before Knight laced a single that skipped past the centerfielder and allowed Langer and Knight the time to sprint all the way around for a 4-0 PBA lead.
Langer continued her solid game in the fourth with a RBI single that plated Brianna Rano while Langer herself came in to score a play later on a Knight run-scoring single.
Amber Johnson toed the rubber for PBA in game two and put together another solid outing as she tossed five innings while allowing only five hits and one run. She struck out five batters and did not walk anyone. Senior Kayti Lundin came on in relief and gave PBA a nice lift with a perfect two innings that included four strikeouts.
Knight went 2-for-3 once again at the top of the order while Langer also finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
