BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team completed a rare weekday morning double-header on Friday with a double-header sweep of Lynn University as the Fish took the second game of the double-header by a final tally of 4-2. The Fish were victorious 5-0 in game one.
Playing in the morning due to the PBA Softball team needing to be back for the athletic campus groundbreaking, the Sailfish improved to 18-6 in their last 24 games while improving to 29-19 on the season.
Starting pitcher Ashley Jones, who completed her eighth shutout of the season in game one, once again went to the pitching circle to start the second game before giving way to reliever Heather Laird after four solid innings of work.
Jones earned the victory by allowing only one run and four hits while striking out five. Perhaps throwing better than she has all season, Laird entered and proved to be just as dominant with three innings of work while allowing just one run and striking out five batters while earning her first collegiate save.
The Fish once again put their opponent in an early hole as they scored two runs in the first inning to give their pitcher and defense the support they need.
Once again utilizing the one-two punch of junior Rebecca Bolinger and freshman Katie Medder at the top of the lineup, both players reached to open the ballgame. After a Chelsea Gravini sacrifice bunt moved up both runners, a walk was earned by shortstop Caitlin Bouschet.
Bolinger would come in to score the game’s first run on a wild pitch while sophomore catcher Candace Horton delivered an infield single later in the inning to stake PBA to an early 2-0 lead.
After the Knights pushed across a single run in the second inning to cut the Sailfish lead in half, PBA would once again need a rally to add to the scoreboard. An RBI single from Bouschet scored Gravini for PBA’s third run of the contest while Bouschet connected again in the sixth inning with yet another run-scoring single to cap the scoring at four runs for the Fish.
Bouschet finished the game 2-for-2 while also drawing a pair of walks in her other two at-bats. Horton also earned a multi-hit game as she finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
PBA will take the weekend off after playing four games in the past 24 hours. The Fish will prepare for a busy week next week that includes a matchup with Barry University on Tuesday, April 8th in Miami Shores, Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 5 pm against the #4-ranked Buccaneers (NCAA Division II) who currently sit at 33-2 and have an amazing 30-game winning streak currently in tact.
