BOCA RATON, Fla.- Pitching perhaps her best ball of the season, Palm Beach Atlantic University softball player Ashley Jones tallied her eighth shutout and second in as many days as she and the Sailfish blanked Lynn University 5-0 on Friday morning in the first game of a double-header.
After holding Northwood University to only one hit on Thursday afternoon, Jones fired back with another solid outing on Friday as she improved to 14-6 on the season while PBA as a whole now stands at 28-19.
Blessed with a solid top-of-the order, head coach Kimmy Blomers was once again a witness to the Sailfish getting started on the right foot as they plated the games first run in the first inning as Katie Medder reached with one out before stealing second-base to put herself in scoring position. After a Chelsea Gravini walk and another stolen base by Medder, shortstop Caitlin Bouschet stepped in a delivered a sacrifice fly to score the speedy Medder for the 1-0 lead.
With Jones dealing out after out from the pitching circle, the Sailfish offense wouldn’t come through with another scoring opportunity until the fifth inning when they plated four more insurance runs to essentially put the game out of reach for the Fighting Knights (16-28).
Back-to-back singles from Rebecca Bolinger and Medder got the inning started before they were advanced each a base by a sacrifice bunt from Gravini. A fielders choice from Bouschet plated the first run before a two-out three-run homerun from senior Holly Elliott put things well in control for the Fish.
Jones finished the contest with 10 strikeouts while walking two batters and allowing four hits while lowering her season ERA to 0.85 on the season.
