Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team hit the road early Saturday morning in hopes of reversing their recent inconsistent play and winning the season series at Florida Southern College. They would accomplish both of those things at Barnett Field as they knocked off the Moccasins by the scores of 7-1 and 4-0.

Junior Rachel Hill broke a personal two game losing streak in the opening game with a strong performance from the pitcher’s circle while freshman Jana Wagner carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning as she posted her second straight shutout.

Left-fielder Lindsey Johnson put together a strong opening game with three hits including her third homerun of the season while a balanced offensive showing in game two led the ‘Fish to a pair of wins and improved their season record to 19-16.

Game One

The Moccasins (14-20) jumped ahead of the Sailfish in game one with a first inning run but it wouldn’t last as PBA fired back with two of their own in the top of the third frame.

Johnson began her big game with a RBI single in the third with another ‘Fish run scoring on a Mocs’ error a play later. They would add on an additional run for a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Johnson launched a homer over the left-field fence.

PBA managed to add on to their lead and put the game out of reach with a four-run seventh inning. Highlighting the scoring outburst were a pair of RBI singles from Johnson and Shelby Wood as well as a sacrifice fly from Brianna Rano.

Hill (Win, 8-2) went the distance for PBA in the circle and worked around six FSC hits while walking two and striking out six.

Johnson finished 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored while Wood also produced a multi-hit game.

Game Two

The second contest of the day featured another outstanding PBA pitching performance as Wagner toed the rubber looking for the sweep and a possible three-out-of-four wins against the Mocs in the season series.

Wagner and Florida Southern starter Taylor Bowen (Loss, 3-6) each tossed two scoreless innings in the book to start the game before PBA began to muster an offensive rally.

The ‘Fish took advantage of some sloppy Mocs’ defense in the inning as Stephanie Garrels reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a Theresa Butler sacrifice bunt. Devin Williams then stepped in and registered a sacrifice fly to bring home Garrels.

Johnson followed with a RBI hit to give PBA a 2-0 lead heading into the middle innings.

A one-out triple from Rano began the next PBA scoring chance in the sixth inning as she came home to score run number three on a RBI hit from Garrels. Sophomore Kayla Knight brought home Garrels one batter later on a RBI single up the middle.

Wagner needed little help from the PBA offense as she breezed thru the FSC lineup to the tune of a two-hit shutout while striking out three and walking none.

Rano finished as the only PBA hitter with a multi-hit game in the nightcap as she went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Palm Beach Atlantic will next host Florida Tech on Tuesday, March 24th for a double-header beginning at 5 pm at Simpson Field.
