WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball continued its roll on Tuesday night, receiving a sparkling pitching performance from Ryan Cota and a clutch RBI single from Chris Farrell to help take down the University of Bridgeport 8-7 at Rubin Park.
Cota came in relief in the second inning and struggled out of the gate, walking the first two batters he faced before ending the inning with a strikeout. After that, the senior right-hander settled in and dominated the Knights’ bats, striking out eight while allowing two hits and just one walk over the next five innings.
PBA was trailing 6-1 when Cota hit his run, but began to chip away with a single run in the third, and then three runs in the fourth to make it 6-5. The Sailfish tied the score in the fourth inning when Sean Visconti reached with a two-out hit-by-pitch and then moved to third on a Chris Farrell double. Both runners advanced when the Bridgeport pitcher balked, and the score was tied 6-6.
Not wasting any time, the Sailfish took advantage of a Knights’ error in the fifth inning and took a brief 7-6 lead.
With Cota out of the game, Bridgeport scratched an unearned run across against the PBA bullpen to tie the score at seven heading to the bottom of the eighth, and that’s when Farrell struck.
Farrell, the senior from nearby Coral Springs, Florida, was battling with the flu bug all night but came through in the clutch for the Sailfish. After Visconti once again started a two-out rally with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Farrell scorched a single to right-center to bring home the go-ahead run.
Eric Russell (Win, 2-0) went the final inning and two-thirds and picked up the victory, striking out two along the way.
Farrell finished the night 4-for-4 and drove in two runs, while Visconti went 1-for-3 and scored three runs. Jason Webb had two base hits and scored three runs, while Andrew Calderone went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Palm Beach Atlantic welcomes the University of Tampa to town for a three-game series on Friday night when the Sailfish and Spartans square off at 6:00 pm at Rubin Park.
