JUPITER, Fla.- For the second consecutive day, the Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team came away with a lopsided loss despite their best efforts in keeping the game close in the early and middle innings as Nova Southeastern University scored six runs in their final two innings to expand their eventual lead to a 13-4 victory on Wednesday night.
After falling 14-7 on Tuesday night in similar fashion with late game runs leading to a blowout, the Sailfish unfortunately faced similar circumstances tonight as well.
Trailing 7-4 entering the eighth inning, the Sailfish bullpen once again came unraveled as the Sharks pounded out five hits over the course of the two innings while the PBA defense contributed to the late runs with two errors.
Making a rare relief appearance out of the Sailfish bullpen, senior Owen Grau entered for freshman Taylor McBath in the top of the third inning and kept the Sailfish within striking distance by posting five innings of work and allowing only two runs. Utilizing a very effective slider throughout his appearance, Grau tallied nine strikeouts while facing only 18 batters in total.
Left-handers Douglas Grahm and Dustin Ducasse didn’t fare as well out of the PBA pen as they combined for five hits allowed and six runs although Ducasse wasn’t charged with an earned run.
NSU first-baseman Bryan Cook paced the Sharks attack witih a 4-for-5 night at the plate while scoring four runs and driving in two others. J.D. Martinez and Dale Alberto, sandwiched with Cook in the middle of the NSU order, both posted three-hit performances to help lead the Sharks to their 20th victory of the season against 13 losses.
Senior Mark Jarvis connected for the only multi-hit game in the PBA lineup with two sharp singles while freshman Jesse Gibbs hit his second homerun of the season with a solo homer in the third inning.
PBA returns to action next Tuesday, April 8th as they will take on Palm Beach County rival Lynn University in a 3 pm showdown in Boca Raton, Florida.
