WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic baseball has had a flair for the dramatic lately, following up a 14-inning walk-off on Saturday with a Ryan Johnson walk-off single that scored Jason Webb to give the Sailfish a 10-9 victory over American International College from Rubin Park.
After the Yellow Jackets scratched a run across to tie the game at 9-9 in the top of the 9th frame, Webb launched a triple over the head of the right fielder and set up the game-winner. Wasting no time, Johnson smacked a ball through the left side and brought the game to a close.
PBA jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the first thanks to a two-run double by Andres Vazquez and an RBI single from Brian Walker. American International would tally a run in the top of the second, but Chris Farrell got the run right back for the Sailfish with a run-scoring single that drove home Pat Kane and made the score 4-1.
AIC took advantage of a Palm Beach Atlantic error in the third and struck for three unearned runs thanks to a three run homer for their pitcher. The visitors would climb ahead with two runs in the fifth and then tack on another in the sixth, but the ‘Fish wouldn’t go away.
Palm Beach Atlantic chipped away for runs in the sixth and seventh innings, tying the game at 7-7 going to the eighth. American International scraped together another run with a two-out hit through the left side of the infield to take an 8-7 lead going to the bottom of the eighth.
The Sailfish loaded the bases up thanks to a Farrell single and tremendous at-bats from Jake Summey and Eddie Vicinanza that resulted in walks. With Hakeem Rhodes at the plate and down in the count 0-2, the Yellow Jackets’ pitcher fired a wild one to the backstop that not only brought home Farrell from third, but also a hustling Summey from second to give PBA a 9-8 lead.
With Ryan Cota (Win, 1-1) trying to finish out the ballgame, AIC scratched together another two-out RBI to tie the score at 9. That’s when the combination of Webb and Johnson came through to give Palm Beach Atlantic their third straight win.
Farrell led the way for the Sailfish, smacking four singles in five attempts on the night. Kane, Visconti, Walker, Webb and Johnson all had two hits on the night, with Walker driving home three and Visconti scoring three.
Palm Beach Atlantic is back in action Tuesday afternoon when they welcome Merrimack College to Rubin Park at 3:00 pm.
