ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- After a pair of close defeats on Friday at the hands of the Spartans of the University of Tampa, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team stormed back on Saturday to take both games of a double-header with Eckerd College.
On their way to game two victory, the Sailfish offense pounded out a season-high 13 hits and seven runs to take the series sweep by a final score of 7-2.
PBA starting pitcher Andrea Fugate (Lake Wales, Fla.) would get all the run support she would need in the second inning as senior Cheryl Stephens (Canton, Ga.) blasted her first homerun of the season, a three-run shot that scored both Caitlin Bouschet (Lake Worth, Fla.) and Candace Horton (Orlando, Fla.)
The Tritons would respond in their half of the second-inning with two runs of their own, keeping the game close against the Fish. Danielle Sedoris connected for a two-run single that scored Janielle Sedoris and Mackenzie Dawson.
PBA’s offense would sputter somewhat in the middle innings as they continued to collect base-hits but couldn’t consistently turn those opportunities into runs as the Fish stranded a total of nine base-runners in the game.
A line drive single by second-baseman Sam Russo (Port Orange, Fla.) gave PBA its fourth run of the contest in the bottom-half of the fourth inning, pushing the lead to 4-2.
Once again cashing in during the late innings, the Fish put the game out of reach with a productive final inning where they posted three additional scores.
Run-scoring singles for both Horton and Stephens provided the first two runs of the seventh frame while Russo delivered an RBI groundout to cap the scoring.
Fugate (2-3) finished out her outing with a complete game performance that included allowing only two earned runs on five hits. The senior right-hander also struck out a season-high seven batters.
Now 5-7 on the season, PBA will return to action on Tuesday, February 12th when they play host to Barry University in a double-header at Howard Park. First pitch is slated for 5:30 pm.
