WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Taking on cross-two rival Northwood University on Saturday afternoon, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s tennis team came away with a tight 5-4 victory over the Seahawks as PBA continues to roll through the middle portion of their season.
Now winners of three in a row and six of their last seven matches, the Sailfish continue to ride the strong play of their senior duo of Brock Newton and Paul Segodo. PBA also was able to overcome a late scratch of junior and number one doubles player John Tilton who was forced to sit out the match due to injury.
Stepping in Tilton’s place was fellow junior James Buerkle who teamed with Newton for an 8-6 victory at number one doubles. Segodo and sophomore Frankie Moulton came together at number two doubles for an 8-2 victory of their own before Northwood’s Alex Dunn and Kevin Butler came away with the victory at number three doubles.
The Fish would once again rely on the strong play of Newton and Segodo in the singles portion of the match as Newton won easily at 6-2, 6-2, followed by Segodo’s victory of 6-2, 6-4.
Other winners for PBA, who improved to 16-5 with the close victory, included Buerkle at 6-4, 6-3 at number five singles.
The Fish will next be matched up against the high-powered team of Rollins College on Thursday, April 4th when they travel to Winter Park, Florida for a 3:30 pm showdown with the Tars.
