WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer head coach Brian McMahon was recently awarded the opportunity to assist the Fort Lauderdale Strikers professional soccer club as a staff advisor. The Strikers compete within the North American Soccer League (NASL) and are South Florida’s only professional soccer team.
General Manager Amaury Nunes reached out to Coach McMahon in January about the opportunity to be a part of the team’s tryouts and player signing period as an evaluator and assist in the selection process for the team.
“I am honored to have been asked to be a part of the Strikers staff on a few occasions for their try-out process,” said McMahon. “Being able to see first-hand the amount of interest in professional soccer around South Florida has been incredible to see and with the direction of the Strikers moving forward I’m very excited to hopefully continue with them helping out when they need me in the future.
Founded in 1977, the Strikers play at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale which can seat 20,000 fans. Soccer legend Ronaldo has recently signed on as part of the ownership group for the Strikers while internationally renowned players such as George Best, Gerd Muller, Gordon Banks, Elias Figueroa, Ray Hudson, Teofilo “Nene” Cubillas and many others have worn the Striker’s recognizable red and yellow uniforms.
The team is under the direction of new head coach Marcelo Neveleff and will begin their regular season matches on Saturday, March 28th when they take on the Jacksonville Armada.
The Strikers’ preseason playing schedule will feature club friendlies against the likes of Palm Beach Atlantic, Florida International University, Florida Gulf Coast University and others.
