MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- The Sailfish softball team took part in their first regular season double-header on Wednesday evening as they took on Barry University at Buccaneer Field. Palm Beach Atlantic dropped the opener 4-3 but came back with some late offense in game two to earn a split via a 5-1 win.
The double-header split saw another incredible performance from sophomore Victoria Gonzalez who carried her momentum from the weekend into Wednesday’s matchup with the Bucs as she crushed another homerun and drove in a total of six runs between the two games.
Freshman Jana Wagner proved superb in game two as she delivered the team’s first complete game victory of the season as she limited the Bucs to three hits over seven innings with just one run allowed.
The opener saw the Sailfish plate a first inning run courtesy of a Gonzalez RBI double but also saw the Bucs plate a pair of runs in each of the first two frames.
Amber Johnson came on in relief for PBA in the second inning and shut things down the remainder of the game as she held the BU offense in check to the tune of five innings with only two hits and one run allowed.
The ‘Fish made it interesting in the sixth inning as Gonzalez launched a mammoth moon shot of a homerun well over the left-field fence to pull her team within one run.
Unfortunately for the ‘Fish the Buccaneers’ hurler retired the team in order in the seventh and escaped with a game one win.
Wagner and BU left-hander Taylor Sabol were locked in a pitcher’s duel in the second game until the sixth inning when PBA plated all five of their runs with two outs.
Shelby Wood began the inning with a double followed by a pinch-hit single from Josie Huddleston to put two on with nobody out. After the Bucs got the first out of the inning on a strikeout followed by a popout, Devin Williams earned a walk to load the bases.
Junior Lindsey Johnson then came to the plate and battled for a RBI single to push across the first run. Not waiting long was Gonzalez who then ripped a double into the right-centerfield gap that cleared the bases and gave the ‘Fish a more comfortable 4-0 advantage. Theresa Butler added on an insurance run following Gonzalez as she connected for a run-scoring single.
Although the Bucs would get a little closer in the sixth with a run of their own Wagner and the Sailfish cruised in the seventh inning to hold on to the 5-1 win.
Palm Beach Atlantic finished the game with seven hits including a 2-for-3 performance from Wood.
The Sailfish will be back in action this weekend against two familiar opponents from the Sunshine State Conference as they will take on Saint Leo University on Saturday followed by two more games against Eckerd College on Sunday.
