ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- Splitting their first two games of the weekend series, the Palm Beach Atlantic University and Eckerd College baseball teams wrapped things up on Saturday afternoon with the Sailfish coming out on top with a commanding 9-4 win over the Tritons on their home field.
The Fish jumped out early with three runs in the first inning to back starter Zach Grau before he ever even took the mound. In fact, it was Grau himself who got the first-inning rally started.
A multi-position threat as both a pitcher and position player, Grau singled with two outs and nobody on in the first inning. After stealing second and the third base, the senior from Kalamazoo, Michigan would trot home as the Tritons catcher threw the ball away while attempting to nail Grau trying to steal.
Sophomore Tony Livelsberger would then follow with a walk which set the stage for junior Joaquin Valdes who delivered with a long-homerun to right-field.
After PBA added another run in the second inning when Jesse Gibbs came in to score on a Scott Urbanek sacrifice fly, the Tritons would answer the call with a four spot of their own in the second inning to knot the score.
With both pitchers settling down in the middle innings, the Fish offense would get back in gear in the sixth inning with three more big runs to take back the lead. After Livelsberger was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning, Valdes once again left the yard, this time to right-center giving the Miami native three homeruns on the day.
PBA added in a pair of runs in the seventh to expand their lead before witnessing Grau shutdown the Tritons to finish out the complete game victory.
Grau tossed all seven innings while allowing four runs and strikeout out for to earn the victory.
With their weekend series now complete, PBA will next turn their sights to St. Thomas University who they will host on Tuesday, April 1st at 6 pm at PBCC.
