CLEARWATER, Fla.- Looking to close out their first weekend tournament of the season with four wins in five tries the Palm Beach Atlantic softball team accomplished their mission on Sunday with a 10-0 victory over Chadron State College followed by a wild, 6-5 win over Saint Leo University. The Sailfish were led by sophomore Victoria Gonzalez who smashed a pair of homeruns on the day while driving home nine of the team’s 16 runs on the day.
Taking on mostly unfamiliar opponents this year at the Eckerd College Spring Invitational the Sailfish and head coach Kimmy Bloemers left Clearwater on Sunday afternoon thankful for a .321 team batting average while scoring 32 runs in five games.
Gonzalez proved to be the biggest hitting hero on Sunday as she crushed a three-run homerun in the opening game versus Chadron State while following that up with an even bigger blast against Saint Leo as she lifted her team from a 3-0 deficit with a grand slam. The Miami, Fla. product finished the tournament with a blistering .533 batting average (8-15) while connecting for three homers, one double and 14 runs batted in.
Game One (PBA vs. Chadron State)
After two games on Saturday the Sailfish were back in action at 9 am on Sunday at the Eddie C. Moore Complex as they took on Chadron State, a NCAA Division II school from Chadron, Nebraska.
It would be clear from the first pitch that the Sailfish were the superior team as they plated runs in four of the six innings played before ending the game at 10-0 by mercy rule in the sixth inning.
The ‘Fish registered 11 hits in the ballgame including a 3-for-4 performance from junior Devin Williams while Lindsey Johnson, Karina Langer and Gonzalez each produced a pair of hits in the win.
The biggest hits in the game came via a two-run single by Kayla Knight in the second inning, a run-scoring triple from Stephanie Garrels in the fourth and Gonzalez’ three-run round tripper in the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Eagles.
Corrie Boggess and Rachel Hill (Win, 2-0) split the pitching duties with Boggess going the first two frames and Hill firing off the final three innings. Both right-handers managed four strikeouts in the win.
Game Two (PBA vs. Saint Leo)
The final game of the tournament pitted the Sailfish against Saint Leo and the Lions quickly jumped in front with a pair of runs in the first and another in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
Things changed courtesy of one Gonzalez’ swing in the fifth however as she launched her third homerun of the young season over the left-field fence that put PBA on top 4-3.
Langer joined the party a few batters later as she added a run-scoring double to make it a five run frame for the ‘Fish.
PBA added what would turn out to be an important insurance run in the top of the sixth inning on a Johnson sacrifice fly that plated Knight for a 6-3 Sailfish lead.
After chasing PBA starting pitcher Jana Wagner without recording an out in the first inning the tall right-hander gave the ball off to Boggess who responded with a solid relief appearance. When Boggess ran into trouble in the fourth it was Wagner who returned to the circle in relief as she closed out the final 3.1 innings of work in relief.
Saint Leo made things interesting in the bottom half of the sixth as they plated a pair of runs but Wagner retired the side in the seventh and final frame with two of her seven strikeouts.
Garrels provided another solid day at the top of the PBA lineup as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
The Sailfish will have little time to celebrate their 4-1 weekend as they will travel to Miami Shores, Fla. on Wednesday, Feb. 11th for a double-header at Barry University. First pitch is scheduled for 5 pm.
