ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.-Palm Beach Atlantic University head baseball coach Rob Avila may have started to have flash backs to 24 hours earlier but in the end the Sailfish bullpen held together just enough down the stretch for the Fish to come away with a 8-7 victory in the opener of Saturday’s scheduled double-header.
Trailing 8-3 entering their final at-bat, Eckerd scored four times in the ninth inning against relievers Trevor Scribner and Brett Hammann. Eventually, Hammann was able to close out the contest and earned the save for starter Owen Grau.
While the Fish never put together a big inning that put the game out of reach, they did put pressure on the Tritons pitching staff all afternoon to the tune of 14 hits and eight runs.
Senior Zach Grau led the way offensively for the Fish as he produced a pair of homers while adding in another hit to finish out the game 3-for-5 with three runs batted in.
Junior infielder Joaquin Valdes also chipped in a homerun on the afternoon as the Sailfish totaled five extra base-hits for the game.
Owen Grau produced a solid outing on the hill for the Sailfish as the senior right-hander completed six innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out a pair.
