ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- After a pair of close defeats on Friday at the hands of the Spartans of the University of Tampa, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team stormed back on Saturday to take both games of a double-header with Eckerd College.
Freshman Heather Laird (Venice, Fla.) continued her solid start as a collegiate pitcher by going all seven innings against the Tritons in game one while limiting EC to only five hits and one run in the 3-1 Sailfish victory.
PBA got on the scoreboard in the second inning when center-fielder Chelsea Gravini (Orlando, Fla.) leadoff with a single through the right-side followed by a single from catcher Candace Horton (Orlando, Fla.). Gravini would come around to score later in the inning.
The Tritons would later tie the game in bottom of the fifth when Clarinda Choice earned a walk, stole second, and was driven home on an RBI single by Janielle Sedoris.
Entering the final frame, PBA would tack on two additional runs to break the tie and walk-away winners of the opening game.
Meaghan Ireland (Galloway, N.J.) got the rally started with a one-out single followed up quickly by a Becca Bolinger (Upland, Ind.) base-hit to put the Sailfish in business. After Katie Medder (Miami, Fla.) reached on a Tritons error, third-baseman Dani Perrotti (Orlando, Fla.) would drive home the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, scoring Ireland.
A bases-loaded walk to Gravini later in the inning gave Laird an insurance run as she struck out two hitters in the final inning including Choice to end the ballgame.
Bolinger paced the Sailfish hitting attack with two of the five team hits while also scoring a run.
