WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic got back on the winning track on Monday night, squeaking by the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon late with a 59-55 victory from the Rubin Arena.
Sophomore Taylor Buchanan put together a strong performance on the night, but came up biggest with the game on the line in the second half. With PBA leading by just two with just under ten seconds to play, the Fort Frye, Ohio native calmly sank two charity tosses to give the Sailfish the lead.
After holding the Cowgirls to just 31% (10-for-32) shooting in the first half, the Sailfish defense struggled in the second stanza, allowing UPR Bayamon to shoot 44% (11-for-25) from the field. Fortunately for Palm Beach Atlantic, they shot 44% (22-for-50) for the game and connected on their free throws when it mattered most.
PBA surrendered 24 turnovers for the game while only forcing Bayamon into 11. However, the Sailfish dominated the glass 43-25 and had more assists than the Cowgirls, 12-7.
Buchanan turned in her first career double-double thanks to a strong effort on the rebounding front for Palm Beach Atlantic. She finished the game with 11 boards, a new career high, and also had 12 points. Nkiru Anyagaligbo led the Sailfish with 16 points and also grabbed eight boards, and Nina Krstic netted 12 points while dishing out a game-high four assists.
The Sailfish are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel across Florida to take on the Ave Maria University Gyrenes at 7 pm.
