WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Behind a stellar performance from Evin Graham and timely free throws by Michael Simpson, Palm Beach Atlantic took down a strong Morehouse College team in overtime on Sunday evening in the Rubin Arena, 78-73.
After the Tigers grabbed a quick lead in the extra session, Clayton Williams knocked down a big three to give the Sailfish a one point advantage. That’s when Simpson, who finished with 13 points in the game, stepped to the line and gave PBA a three point advantage. After a defensive stop, the Spring, Texas native knocked down two more from the charity strip to give Palm Beach Atlantic its final five point advantage.
Morehouse had to claw their way back early when PBA jumped out to an 11-2 advantage to kick off the game. The Sailfish led by as much as 11 in the opening half, but the Maroon Tigers evened up the score by halftime thanks to a strong defensive effort.
The second half was more of a back-and-forth battle until Palm Beach Atlantic strung together a 12-3 run to erase a one-point deficit and surge ahead to an eight-point lead. With nearly three minutes left, PBA hit a cold stretch and couldn’t handle the MC pressure, as the visitors went on an 8-0 over the fnial 2:53 to tie the game and send the two squads into overtime.
It was an extremely evenly played game on the statistical side, with Palm Beach Atlantic finishing with a 47% (28-for-60) shooting percentage from the floor and Morehouse ended at 46% (27-for-59). PBA (8-for-20) hit one more three than MC (7-for-20), and both teams finished with 15 assists. The Tigers did outrebound the Sailfish 35-29, but the hosts shot 70% (14-for-20) from the free throw line while the guests shot 60% (12-for-20).
Graham’s 21 points led the way for PBA, while Williams added 14, Simpson 13 and Ronnell Ross 10. Junior Derick Yepes led the Sailfish in rebounding with six boards and Graham dished out a game-high four assists.
The victory puts the Sailfish at 4-0 on the season, their best record to start the year since the 2004-05 season. It also avenges a five-point loss to the Maroon Tigers from last season in which PBA fell 61-56
