MURFREESBORO, N.C.- Following an exciting NCCAA South Region Tournament this past week several Palm Beach Atlantic men’s soccer players were recognized as members of the All-Tournament team and All-Region listings. Juniors Tom Gavin and Steven Fiema highlighted the Sailfish award winners as Gavin earned Region Player of the Year honors and Fiema took home Tournament MVP accolades.
A total of four players earned NCCAA All-Region accolades for the 2014 season under first-year head coach Brian McMahon.
Gavin earned first-team honors in addition to his Region Player of the Year nod while joined on the first-team by sophomore Lucas Coutinho and senior Daniel Pena. Sophomore Michael O'Sullivan was chosen to the second-team.
Joining Fiema on the All-Tournament team was sophomore defender Neil Slooves, who registered the overtime game-winner in the Regional championship game, as well as Gavin, Coutinho and freshman Jerry Saint-Vil.
Gavin proved instrumental throughout the 2014 campaign in helping transition the team under a new coaching staff and vastly different roster from previous seasons. A transfer from Belhaven (Miss.) University where he previously played for Coach McMahon, Gavin settled in as a reliable leader and team captain in the midfield.
He finished the season with two goals and three assists while starting 18 of the team’s 19 games. The Hartlepool, England native finished second on the team in total minutes played among field players with 1,479 minutes.
Slowed by injury early in the season, Coutinho returned to the PBA lineup in the second-half of the season and picked up where he left off as a dynamic play maker. He leads the team with seven assists while adding in three goals in only 12 matches on the season.
Pena returned for a final year of eligibility in 2014 and provided the ‘Fish with a solid offensive option at the top. He stands at the top of the team leaderboard with five goals and five assists for a total of 15 points while starting 18 matches on the season.
The Sailfish defense was at its finest throughout the season when it had the healthy services of Michael O’Sullivan, a transfer from Eastern Florida State College and a native of Chelmsford, England. O’Sullivan finished with 16 matches started and 1,349 minutes of field time. He also added in a goal and assist in addition to his good work in the defensive backfield.
Slooves earned All-Tournament team honors after registering the regional game-winner while providing the team with a solid defensive presence throughout the season. He leads all PBA field players with 1,504 minutes played on the season while chipping in three goals.
Saint Vil gave the ‘Fish a nice boost as a true freshman this season and finished with eight starting assignments including each of the team’s NCCAA regional contests. The Jupiter, Florida product gave the team a solid option on the wing while giving PBA fans a glimpse into the bright future of the program.
PBA will continue their season a bit longer by participating in the NCCAA National Tournament from Dec. 1-6 in Kissimmee, Florida.
