MURFREESBORO, N.C.- A goal just shy of the 100th minute of action on Saturday by sophomore defender Neil Slooves lifted the Sailfish men’s soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win in the final of the NCCAA South Regional Championship. The victory clinched a spot for Palm Beach Atlantic in the NCCAA National Championship Tournament which will be played Dec. 1-6, 2014 in Kissimmee, Florida.
Senior Daniel Pena delivered the free kick into the box that setup Slooves for the game-winner at the 99:36 mark in the first overtime period. It was the third goal of the season for Slooves including his second game-winning goal.
It wouldn’t take long for the Sailfish (10-6-3) to get on the board in the first-half as Lucas Coutinho found a streaking Steven Fiema in just the ninth minute of the match for a 1-0 PBA lead.
That would be the only score in regulation for the Sailfish as SWU (13-7) tallied a game-tying goal in the 36th minute when Joao Oliveira found Ivan Malagon for a shot opportunity near the top of the box.
A hard-fought first-half featured a 10-5 lead for Palm Beach Atlantic in total shots as the two teams settled for a 1-1 halftime score.
Although things continued to get even more physical in the second stanza neither team would find the back of the net which forced overtime to decide the regional champion.
Southern Wesleyan overtook the ‘Fish in total shots in the second-half by a 9-7 margin but it wasn’t enough to earn a go-ahead goal.
Steeven Raymont made three saves in goal for the ‘Fish while a total of seven field players played the entire match.
