TAMPA, Fla.- With the score tied at two entering the final inning, the University of Tampa was able to push across a final run and escape with a sweep of the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team on Friday evening. The Spartans won game one by a final score of 3-1.
The top four hitters in the Sailfish did all the damage in game two including a three-hit performance by freshman right-fielder Katie Medder (Miami, Fla.).
After taking their first lead of the two-game set in the top-half of the third inning when junior outfielder Becca Bolinger (Upland, Ind.) came around to score on a wild-pitch, the Sailfish would unfortunately hand back the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
UT right-fielder Cassie Barnes led off the inning with a triple and would come home to score on a bunt single by Ashley Arcuri. Michele Horan would follow with a walk and eventually push the Spartans to a 2-1 advantage by scoring on a Samantha Becker sacrifice fly.
With both pitchers dealing in the middle innings, it would once again be a late rally by the Sailfish that would tie things up.
Medder led off the sixth inning with her third bunt single of the ballgame and eventually be moved to second on a Dani Perrotti (Orlando, Fla.) sacrifice bunt. Freshman Caitlin Bouschet (Lake Worth, Fla.) would knot the score with a RBI single, scoring Medder from second-base.
After holding the Sailfish at bay in the top-half of the seventh, the Spartans would go to work in the bottom half as they manufactured the game-winning run.
Pinch-hitter Jessica Tejas got the rally started as she came off the Spartans bench for a leadoff single. After a failed sacrifice resulted in a fielders choice, Spartans head coach Leslie Kantar elected to attempt another sacrifice bunt, this time succeeding with Brandi Blout moving Tejas into scoring position.
Next up came the pesky Acuri who belted the Heather Laird offering for a single, her fourth hit of the game, scoring Tejas with the game-winning run.
Laird (1-3) continued to pitch well for the Fish and fell as the tough-luck loser after tossing nearly seven innings and allowing three runs, while striking out four Spartan batters. Deanna Hennriot registered the victory for Tampa and improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Sailfish will continue their weekend slate with a scheduled double-header versus Eckerd College on Saturday with first-pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
