Tennis Teams Take Part In C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic tennis teams were in action over the weekend at what is considered one of the nation’s premier fall collegiate tournaments, the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational hosted by Rollins College.
Participating in this year’s invitational were top-tier NCAA Division II programs like Barry University, Lynn University, Rollins College and Saint Leo University. Also competing on the men’s side were Division I schools Stetson University, Troy University and the University of Central Florida.
Senior Mark Heimberger won his first round match against Greg Almeida of Bethune-Cookman by 6-0 and 6-4 scores, but then fell to UCF’s Chris Barrus in the quarterfinals, 6-2 and 6-2.
Heimberger and fellow senior Matt Leeds teamed up for doubles and took down Rollins’ pair of Guilherme Dumit and Nico Khazzam.
The other Sailfish that participated in the event, Fernando Arroyo and Leeds on the men’s side and Ana Reich, Leyla Taracena, Michaela Mignemi and Dezi Bowman on the women’s side, fell in the first round of singles.
After falling in their first doubles match, Reich and Taracena teamed up in the consolation bracket to take down Flagler College’s Krista Ingrilli and Sara Yousif 8-2.
PBA has one final fall tournament on the docket, participating in the Daytona Open hosted by Bethune-Cookman.
