LAKELAND, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic tennis was back in action over the weekend, with both men’s and women’s teams taking part in a rain-filled weekend at the 2014 USTA/ITA South Region Championships hosted by Florida Southern College.
In the premier Division II region of NCAA Division II, the Sailfish got impressive showings from many of their players.
On the women’s side, Valerie Nagovitcina had a great showing in singles, winning her first two matches over Saint Leo’s Katherine Zaatini and then Florida Southern’s Magda Riutort. Yoanna Peshev also defeated her first opponent, Florida Tech’s Mariana Castaneiras, before falling in the second round.
In doubles, Nagoviticina and Veena Vasquez made it passed two opponents into the quarterfinal.
For the men, Nicolas Uryson put together another strong showing, winning over Florida Southern’s Ethan Wilcox in the first round and then taking down Fons Verberne from Saint Leo in the second.
Two men’s doubles pairs made a splash as well, as Uryson and Romain Nowaczyl pulled off an 8-4 victory in their first match against Rollins before falling to Valdosta State. The greater success came from the pairing of Asti Adams and Nicholas Battistini, who advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over FIT and Florida Southern before bowing out to a pair from West Florida.
