WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – With the collegiate basketball season quickly approaching, Sailfish head men’s basketball coach David Balza announced the 2014-15 Palm Beach Atlantic schedule on Thursday afternoon.
The 26-game schedule features 24 games against NCAA Division II South Region opponents and will also feature home-and-home matchups with every school in the Sunshine State Conference. Palm Beach Atlantic is a provisional member of the premier Division II athletics conference for the 2014-15 season.
PBA’s schedule includes 15 home games, the most since the Sailfish made the transition to Division II, and also includes eight double-headers with the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s team.
The season opens up on the road against Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., and moves on after an exhibition at Division I Stetson University with the University of Puerto Rico-Mayquez coming to town for the 2014-15 home opener.
That starts a string of four straight home games that wraps up with a visit from Flagler College on December 3rd that is also the Student Athlete Advisory Committee’s (SAAC) first of two “Jam the Gym” Nights.
Palm Beach Atlantic’s big roadtrip for the season will be a journey to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., to take on Bowie State University. They’ll wrap up the 2014 portion of the season with a game at home against Paine College.
Four of five games to start the New Year will be crucial for the Sailfish, playing on the road at Sunshine State Conference opponents Rollins, Florida Tech, Barry and Tampa. That leads into a stretch at the end of January and into February where PBA plays six straight games in the friendly confines of the Rubin Arena against the likes of Eckerd, Florida Southern, Rollins, Barry, FIT and Tampa.
Senior day comes on February 21st this season as Palm Beach Atlantic hosts Johnson University and will say goodbye to five seniors, Evin Graham, Ronnell Ross, Clayton Williams, Garet Tucker and Clark Major. The regular season finale will be February 28th in St. Petersburg against the Eckerd College Tritons.
Should PBA advance to the post season, the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional begins March 14th.
Coach Balza remarked about the 2014-15 schedule, “I am excited about the balance and challenge of this year’s schedule. It is great to have so many home games when school is in session. We have a tremendous student section and it was important to me to play in front of them as often as possible, especially in the second semester.”
He went on to add, “In addition, we wanted to challenge ourselves and earn a high strength of schedule. We have 18 games vs. opponents in the Sunshine Conference, the toughest league in the country. That, combined with tough road games and 24 total region games will truly challenge us.”
