ARCATA, Calif. – Palm Beach Atlantic opened the 2014 Humboldt State Lumberjack Classic with a tough 3-2 overtime loss at the hands of BYU-Hawaii Friday afternoon.
PBA started the scoring for the contest in the seventh minute of the game, getting a goal from Audrey Decker from a beautiful feed from Monica Rojas. The goal was Decker’s team-best third on the season.
BYU-Hawaii came right back and tied the game ten minutes later, and the score would remain 1-1 into halftime. The Seasiders were first to strike in the second stanza, scoring on a breakaway to take the 2-1 lead.
The Sailfish proved resilient, however, as freshman Morgan Campbell scored the equalizer on a perfectly placed ball from the right side that the keeper could not control. With the score at 2-2 both teams vamped up their offensive pressure, but neither would cash in on their opportunities and regulation ended without a winner.
Overtime was at the midway point when BYU-Hawaii took advantage of PBA’s inability to clear the ball from the top of the box. The game-winning blast came from nine yards out and blasted the right side of the net.
BYU-Hawaii dominated the overall shots on the day 16-8, and keeper Kayla Wincko was able to post seven saves. Of PBA’s eight shots, five of them were on goal, but unfortunately they were unable to find the back of the net when it mattered most.
Stats will be made available as soon as possible.
Palm Beach Atlantic returns to action Saturday morning against Holy Names University at 11 AM Pacific, 2 PM Eastern in PBA’s final match of the Lumberjack Classic.
