SKILLMAN, N.J.- The Sailfish women’s tennis team had two of its members honored this week with the release of the annual regional award winners by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Senior Jessica Wharton was selected as the South Region’s winner of the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship & Leadership Award while junior Veena Vasquez was named as the South Region’s Player to Watch.

The honor for Wharton is her first ITA selection in her career while joining former PBA women’s tennis standout Natalia Trotter as a past winner of the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship & Leadership Award.

The Arthur Ashe, Jr.  Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. In August the national winners are honored during a special ceremony hosted by the USTA during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day inside Ashe Stadium. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

Wharton recently completed her fourth year as a part of the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis program while serving as a team leader and strong on-court performer. She also excelled off the court as evidenced by her being named the Outstanding Public Relations graduate in the PBA School of Communications.

Vasquez hails from nearby Boynton Beach, Fla. and was a graduate of Spanish River Community High School before deciding on Palm Beach Atlantic for her college choice. Part of that decision came with her decision to enroll in the PBA Pharmacy program while maintaining her superior tennis skills.

She concluded her junior season in 2014 as the No. 1-singles player for the Sailfish while earning a national ITA singles ranking of No. 50 for Division II. She produced a 15-5 singles mark on the season while helping aide the ‘Fish to a 14-9 overall record and a No. 50 team ranking by the ITA.
