PENSACOLA, Fla.- The 2014 Daktronics All-Region teams were released on Monday with a trio of Palm Beach Atlantic players all earning first time recognition following a historic season for the Sailfish softball program. Sophomores Lindsey Johnson and Theresa Butler were joined by freshman Victoria Gonzalez on the Daktronics All-Region second-team which points to the bright future of PBA softball.
The Daktronics All Region teams are voted on by the Sports Information Directors of each institution in the South Region which encompasses three conferences (Gulf South Conference, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Sunshine State Conference) as well as any Independent institutions such as PBA.
All three PBA players were important cogs to the team’s offensive prowess this season which featured the Sailfish as one of the top offensive teams in the South Region. This good work coupled with the rest of the roster saw the team earn an invitation to the NCAA South Regional Tournament for just the second time in program history.
A native of Hazlehurst, Ga. and a product of Appling Christian Academy, Johnson has put together a pair of astonishing seasons wearing a Sailfish softball uniform in her first two campaigns. She finished as the team leader in seven offensive categories while playing in all 46 games this season for the ‘Fish.
In total, Johnson batted .396 with 61 total hits including 15 doubles, six homeruns and four triples. She proved to be an all-around threat with 37 runs scored, 32 runs driven in and 28 stolen bases in 32 attempts while making only one error in centerfield.
Butler took her game to another level as a sophomore by starting every game at second-base while finding her bat as a fixture in the middle of the order. The Mulberry, Fla. native knocked home 28 runs on the season while producing 39 hits including four doubles, four homeruns and three triples. Her 17 walks finished second on the squad while finishing a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases.
Gonzalez exploded onto the collegiate softball scene with a .427 batting average in her first season after starring at Pembroke Pines Charter High School in Miami, Fla. Her high batting mark left her just one point away from tying the school record set by Vanessa Chacchioli in 2004 when she hit .428.
Settling mostly as the team’s regular designated player, Gonzalez finished with 56 total hits including 14 doubles, five homeruns and two triples while driving home a team-high 35 runs. She finished as the team leader in slugging percentage (.679) and on-base percentage (.493) while scoring 22 runs and drawing 14 walks.
Player of the Year honors went to Valdosta State University senior outfielder Courtney Albritton who is currently hitting .443 with 25 homeruns, 64 runs batted in and an eye-popping .958 slugging percentage and .516 on-base percentage.
Pitcher of the Year honors went to the University of Tampa’s Kayla Cox who is the reigning Daktronics National Pitcher of the Year. The senior from Riverview, Fla. finished this season with another strong campaign in the circle by tallying a record of 18-3 with a 0.84 earned-run average and 210 strikeouts in 159 innings pitched.
