Sailfish Tripped Up by McMurry University but Still Advance Out of Pool Play

MOBILE, Ala.- After sweeping their opposition on day one of the NCCAA National Tournament the Sailfish men’s tennis team returned to the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center for their final pool play match versus McMurry University. Although both teams were guaranteed to move on the 5-1 win by MU sealed the No. 1-seed out of Pool B for the War Hawks while the ‘Fish will settle for the No. 2-seed.
The loss for the Sailfish now matches them up with the No. 1-seed from Pool A which is Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University who enters play as the No. 11-ranked (ITA) team in the country and 3-0 so far at the NCCAA National Tournament.
A provisional NCAA Division II program, APU will bring in a record of 22-6 against PBA who now stands at 14-11. The semi-final matchup will take place at 9 am on Thursday.
Against the War Hawks the Sailfish found themselves trailing 2-1 after doubles as the No. 19-ranked duo of Romain Nowaczyk and Nicholas Uryson were the team’s lone victors on the day as they claimed a 9-7 win at No. 1-doubles.
Needing just three wins in singles, McMurry utilized a 6-2, 6-0 win by Felipe Cruz over Nowaczyk at No. 1-singles while Casjen Rico and Cristian Mendes each produced wins at Nos. 5 and 6-singles respectively.
McMurry now advances to the semi-finals as well with a showdown against Roberts Wesleyan College, the No. 2-seed from Pool A, at 9 am on Thursday.
Should the Sailfish advance beyond their match with Azusa Pacific they will battle the winner of McMurry and Roberts Wesleyan on Friday at 9 am.
