BOCA RATON, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic took on Palm Beach County rival Lynn University in a marathon contest to open up their three-game series on Friday afternoon, with the Sailfish taking down the host Knights 7-6 in 11 innings from the Lynn Baseball Field.
PBA took advantage of Lynn miscues and showed resilience in the extra-inning victory, withstanding two LU comebacks along the way. The ‘Fish took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning on a Ryan Gerber single that scored Chris Farrell, and then tacked on another in the sixth thanks to another Lynn error. The Knights wouldn’t go away, tacking on single runs of their own in both the eighth and ninth innings to send it to extras.
In the crunch time of extra innings, Farrell led off the 11th frame with a single. Senior Joel Buchko then reached on an error while trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt, setting up another sacrifice, this time for Andres Vazquez. With runners on second and third and only one away, senior Ryan Drew knocked a single to left-center to drive home both runs.
Fortunately for the Sailfish, the Knights were only able to push across a single run in their half of the 11th, snapping PBA’s nine-game losing skid.
The Sailfish got an admirable performance on the mound from a trio of hurlers, with Kennie Silvestri pitching into the eighth inning and allowing just three earned runs. Lefty Dominic Monda (Win, 5-4) went three innings in relief and allowed one earned, while reliever Robbie Pettet (Save, 1) picked up his first save of the season.
Junior Chris Farrell led the way at the plate with a 3-for-5 day, scoring two runs and driving in another, while Ryan Drew turned in a 2-for-4 day with two runs driven in.
Palm Beach Atlantic returns to Boca Raton for the 2014 season finale coming in the form of a double-header that begins at noon on Saturday afternoon from the Lynn University Baseball Field.
