INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The Palm Beach Atlantic softball program found themselves named as the No. 6-ranked team in the initial NCAA Division II regional rankings that were released late on Wednesday evening. This ranking coupled with the team’s double-header split with No. 5-ranked Rollins College on Thursday puts the team in prime position to potentially earn their second-ever trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament in May.
The Sailfish have just two games remaining on their regular season schedule which they will host on Wednesday, April 23rd versus Northwood University at the Lake Catherine Complex. The 5 pm showdown between PBA and Northwood will be Senior Night and should have little to no effect on the team’s standing in the rankings with Northwood being a NAIA opponent.
The University of Alabama-Huntsville (33-6) ranks first in the region and boasts a 29-6 in-region record while the University of Tampa (24-4) is second with a 19-4 in-region mark.
Valdosta State University (36-12) whom the Sailfish defeated early in the season is at No. 3 while the University of North Alabama (33-12) joins Rollins (34-11) in the top-five. Following PBA in the rankings is Saint Leo University (26-18) at No. 7, the University of West Florida (18-18) at No. 8, Nova Southeastern University (22-16) at No. 9 and the University of West Alabama (24-18) rounding out the top-10.
The top-8 teams in the region are awarded selections to the NCAA Regional Tournament with four teams each selected to a pair of different playing sites which will be announced at a later date. The three conferences occupying the South Region (Gulf South Conference, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Sunshine State Conference) will each reach receive an automatic bid with the remainder of the five selections coming as at-large bids.
The Sailfish earned the No. 6-seed in their only other trip to the NCAA postseason back in 2010 with the ‘Fish making it as far as the regional championship game before falling to Valdosta State University.
This season’s NCAA South Regional Tournaments will take place on May 9-11 at two different sites should the Sailfish be selected.
