Box Score

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic and Barry University softball programs gathered on Tuesday evening for a rainy pair of games at the Lake Catherine Complex with each team claiming one win in the process. The Sailfish fought back from a late 3-1 deficit in the opener to claim an eventual 4-3 victory while the Bucs dominated from the opening inning of the nightcap for a 9-0 win in just five innings.

The double-header split is eerily similar to the team’s previous matchup which took place in Miami Shores, Fla. back on February 26th when the Bucs earned a 3-1 opening game win only to see the Sailfish blow them out in game two by a 10-0 score.

Palm Beach Atlantic is now 28-12 on the season while Barry stands at 23-17.

Game One

Sophomore Amber Johnson (Win, 16-5) went to the circle in game one for Palm Beach Atlantic and came away with her 16th victory of the season as she allowed three runs (one earned) over seven innings while striking out two and walking one along the way.

PBA broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior Mackenzie Johnson lined a shot to left-field that plated Lindsey Johnson for a 1-0 PBA lead.

The Bucs stormed back with all three of their runs in the top of the fifth inning however as they took advantage of two PBA errors while also managing three hits.

PBA would not wait around however as they quickly tied the score at 3-3 with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth when freshmen Victoria Gonzalez and Brianna Rano both delivered RBI singles.

The eventual game-winning run came home to score in the bottom of the sixth when Stephanie Garrels singled with two outs, stole second-base and came in to score on a single by Jen Hunter.

Amber Johnson retired the Bucs in the seventh following a leadoff bunt single from Kayla Ogle as she was eventually stranded at third-base when Johnson got the final batter to fly out to end the game.

The ‘Fish finished with 12 hits as a team in the game including five players with two hits each. Garrels and Hunter atop the order each provided a pair of base knocks while Gonzalez, Rano and Camille Benito each chipped in two hits also.

Ogle was 4-for-4 in the game for Barry while scoring a run and swiping her 40th base of the year.

Game Two

The Bucs came out hot from the very start against PBA starting pitcher Kayti Lundin (Loss, 7-2) in the night cap as BU rapped out four runs in the first inning while adding in three more runs in the second against the PBA bullpen.

Taylor Sabol (Win, 8-7) went the necessary five innings for Barry in the circle and scattered four hits and struck out five PBA batters.

Ogle was once again the catalyst at the top with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate with a walk while Kristina Pazienza also managed three hits in four trips with three RBI’s.

The Sailfish will host Rollins College on Thursday, April 17th for their next contest with a first-pitch scheduled for 4 pm.
