PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic used timely hitting from their seniors to wrap up the senior weekend with a hard-fought 6-3 victory over the Barry Buccaneers from Palm Beach Gardens High School on Sunday afternoon.
The Sailfish got the scoring started right away, with senior Joel Buchko driving in fellow senior Anthony Ortiz with a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning. The solo tally would begin a string of three consecutive innings of scoring for PBA. Senior Spencer Castro launched a two-out, solo home run for his fourth of the year in the second inning, and Andres Vazquez tacked on a two-out RBI single in the third.
Barry had their own string of single-scoring innings, putting up one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings. The game stayed tied until the sixth inning, when senior Ryan Drew smacked his fourth home run of the season and put the Sailfish ahead for good.
Junior reliever Dominic Monda (Win, 4-3), who pitched in both Friday and Saturday’s games, was called upon to get the final ten outs of the game. It was looking like a nail-biter to the finish until Ryan Gerber gave the ‘Fish some room to breathe in the eighth. The senior shortstop lined a double to right field with the bases loaded and extended the Sailfish lead to three.
For the second straight game, PBA played a perfect defensive game. One of the keys to today’s contest was the play by the infield, with Gerber, Ortiz, and Chris Farrell combining on three double-plays, as well as turning in multiple “web gems”.
Palm Beach Atlantic returns to action on Tuesday evening, traveling to Davie, Fla. to take on Nova Southeastern, beginning at 6 PM.
