Box Score

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- The Sailfish softball team shook off a recent three-game losing streak in style on Wednesday evening by defeating Lynn University three times in one day including a walk-off win in the final game. The two teams concluded a suspended game from earlier in the season with PBA managing an 11-10 win followed by victories of 4-0 and 6-5 to improve the Sailfish season record to 26-10.

The final victory came in dramatic fashion as sophomore Lindsey Johnson came away with a one-out single followed by a line-drive from freshman Victoria Gonzalez that broke a 5-5 tie as Johnson scooted quickly all the way around to score the game-winning run.

The three victories coupled with their 3-2 win over Lynn back on March 19th in Boca Raton sealed a season sweep by the Sailfish over the Fighting Knights who are now 20-25 on the season.

Suspended Game (Originally Started March 19th)

With the score tied 10-10 after ten innings on March 19th the game would be called due to lack of lights at the LU Softball Field and scheduled to conclude as part of the regularly-scheduled matchup between the Sailfish and Fighting Knights on Wednesday in Palm Beach Gardens.

Utilizing international rules, the ‘Fish had Stephanie Garrels placed on second-base to start the inning which set up a sacrifice-bunt from Jen Hunter and then a sacrifice-fly RBI from Theresa Butler.

Amber Johnson (Win, 12-5) would begin a busy day inside the circle by retiring the Knights in order in the bottom of the frame to preserve the 11-10 win.

In total, Gonzalez finished 4-for-6 in the game with a pair of runs scored and a homerun dating back to the original start of the game in Boca Raton. Lindsey Johnson and Shelby Wood each finished 3-for-5 in the game as well with Johnson knocking out a homerun while Wood drove home a pair of runs.

Game One

Following the quick conclusion to the suspended game the two teams marched back out for their regular matchup with PBA’s Amber Johnson once again taking the ball inside the pitcher’s circle.

The former Berean Christian School product came away with another gem as she tossed her third shutout of the season while allowing eight LU hits, walking three and striking out three on the way to her 14th win of the season.

Kasey Murray (Loss, 11-18) opposed Johnson in the circle for LU and was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on 10 hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Palm Beach Atlantic scored single runs in the second and third innings to stake the team to an early lead while adding on two key insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Mackenzie Johnson came away with a nice line-drive RBI down the right-field line for the game’s opening score to plate freshman Brianna Rano in the second while a bases-loaded walk to Chelsie Hersey brought in another run in the third.

Run-scoring singles by Hunter and Theresa Butler in the sixth padded the PBA lead.

Garrels finished 2-for-4 while Butler and Hersey also added two hits each in the game.

Game Two

The final contest of the day once again saw Amber Johnson return to the pitcher’s circle for the Sailfish as she worked through four innings while allowing one run and exiting with a 4-1 lead.

The Fighting Knights would live up to their name however in the top of the fifth inning as they plated three runs against the PBA bullpen and tied the score 4-4. After PBA retook the lead in the bottom of the inning it was once again LU’s turn for an answer in the top of the sixth as they again tied the score at 5-5.

That set the stage for Gonzalez' heroics as reliever Kayti Lundin (Win, 7-1) picked up the victory for Palm Beach Atlantic as she went the final 2.1 innings and allowed one run while working around four hits and three walks.

PBA jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second frame thanks to an RBI single from senior Camille Benito and a groundout that plated another run off the bat of Hersey.

Two more runs came home to score in the bottom of the fourth when Garrels connected for a RBI hit while Hunter chipped in a RBI single as well. The team scored again in the fifth thanks to a LU wild pitch while Gonzalez drove home Lindsey Johnson for the game-winner in the seventh inning.

The Sailfish managed 10 hits in the win with Lindsey Johnson finishing 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Hunter also came away with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate.

PBA will be off until Saturday, April 12th when they hit the road to take on Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. for a double-header beginning at 2 pm.
