WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Getting back to their winning ways after an extra inning defeat in their last outing, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team came away with a 5-0 shutout behind the strong arm of sophomore Ashley Jones and some early offensive production from the Sailfish lineup.
Improving to 22-17 on the season, the Fish scored three times in the first inning to give Jones an early cushion and turn back the Tritons for their 13th straight loss.
Earning her 11th win of the season as well as her sixth shutout, Jones (Jensen Beach, Fla.) went the distance to the tune of 14 strikeouts and limiting Eckerd to seven hits and only one walk.
The Fish got on the board with a productive first inning that sent all nine batters to the plate as PBA pounded out six hits in the inning and three runs.
Casey Gibson (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off with a single followed up by a bunt single from right-fielder Katie Medder (Miami, Fla.) as both speedy outfielders came around to score on a double to the left-field gap by freshman Caitlin Bouschet (Lake Worth, Fla.). PBA’s leading hitter at just over a .400 batting average, Bouschet connected for her first of three doubles in the game with her liner in the first inning.
With Jones mowing down the Tritons order each inning, the PBA offense wouldn’t score again until the sixth inning as they tallied their final two scores of the game to end the contest with a 5-0 victory.
Another two-run double by Bouschet scored both pinch-runner Meaghan Ireland (Galloway, N.J.) and senior Melissa Wallach (West Palm Beach, Fla.) who had singled earlier in the inning.
