TAMPA, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic fell victim to No. 1 University of Tampa in both games of their Saturday double-header, getting shut down 8-1 in Game One and then 5-0in Game Two from the University of Tampa Baseball Field.
The host Spartans jumped ahead in the first inning and slowly built their lead the rest of the way. After scoring a run in the first, they countered PBA’s lone tally in the fourth with a run of their own. The 2-1 lead built to 5-1 in the sixth, and then swelled to the 8-1 final in the eighth.
After outhitting Tampa on Friday night, the Sailfish mustered just five base hits for the game. Senior Joel Buchko led the way with a 2-for-3 performance that also included a walk. Chris Farrell went 1-for-4 and scored the lone PBA run.
For the second straight game, Palm Beach Atlantic’s defense turned in a spotless performance, but unfortunately the pitching surrendered eight walks as well as 14 hits.
The second game of the double-header started in much of the same fashion as the first: Tampa jumping on the board early with a run in the first. The No. 1 Spartans would add four more in the bottom of the third and seemingly put the game out of reach early on.
Palm Beach Atlantic only managed nine hits in Saturday’s double-dip after collected 14 on Friday night. In Game Two, Anthony Ortiz had half of the Sailfish hits with a 2-for-4 game.
Next up for the Sailfish is a visit from South Florida rival Nova Southeastern on Tuesday at 6 PM from Palm Beach Gardens High School.
