TAMPA, Fla. – No. 1 Tampa rallied in the bottom of the 9th with a walk-off single to squeak past Palm Beach Atlantic 7-6 in the series opener on Friday night from the University of Tampa baseball field.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Tampa third baseman Tyler Ding sent a slow liner to left field that scored the game-winning run just before the tag from Spencer Castro.
PBA fell behind early on when the Spartans flexed their offensive muscles, but the Sailfish rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score. The ‘Fish sent nine batters to the plate in the frame, stringing together four straight hits to drive in three runs and collecting seven hits overall.
Andres Vazquez and Ryan Drew smacked back-to-back doubles to put Palm Beach Atlantic on the board in the second inning. It would be the beginning of a big day for Vazquez, who finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Drew had two hits in four chances and knocked in two runs. Also joining the two-hit party were Jason Webb, Chris Farrell, and Joel Buchko.
The Sailfish played an errorless game in the field and outhit Tampa 14-9. Unfortunately PBA also left eight runners on base.
Palm Beach Atlantic returns to action Saturday afternoon against Tampa beginning at 1 PM.
