MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- Winning their fifth game in as many tries at the Barry University Tournament, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team continued to get things done effectively in all phases of the game as the Sailfish cruised to a second consecutive victory over the likes of Indiana University-Pennsylvania on Sunday evening by a score of 7-0.
Sophomore Heather Laird (Venice, Fla.) continued to provide head coach Kimmy Bloemers with a solid second pitching option behind ace right-hander Ashley Jones. Laird went the distance while allowing only two hits against IUP and struck out two batters while working around five walks.
PBA completed a similar decision against IUP on Saturday evening with a 6-0 win behind the strong pitching of Jones.
Offensively, the Sailfish didn’t wait around long to get on the board as they tallied two runs to stake Laird to the early lead.
Speedster Katie Medder (Miami, Fla.) got things started with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Continually putting pressure on opposing defenses with her electric speed on the base-paths, Medder promptly stole third-base setting up the middle of the PBA order. Caitlin Bouschet (Lake Worth, Fla.) came through with a single that sent Medder home for the game’s first run.
Bouschet would come around to score later in the inning as third-baseman Dani Perrotti (Orlando, Fla.) connected for a RBI single.
The Fish would tack on another run in the third inning on another Perrotti RBI single and one more score in the fourth inning when second-baseman Holly Elliott (Seminole, Fla.) connected for her third homerun of the tournament to lead off the inning.
Palm Beach Atlantic added on three more runs in their final inning at the plate as Bouschet registered a run-scoring double while two more runs came around to score on an RBI single from senior Cheryl Stephens (Canton, Ga.) and an error from the IUP defense.
Bouschet finished the evening with three hits, two runs scored, and two runs driven in to lead the Sailfish hitting efforts as the blue and white busted out 10 hits in the victory. Medder, Perrotti, and Elliott each registered two hits each in the shutout win.
With the victory, the Sailfish have now won nine of their last 10 games and stand at a season-high five games over five hundred at 21-16.
