MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- Improving to 4-0 to start the Barry University Tournament, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team once again cruised to victory as sophomore Ashley Jones recorded a seven inning shutout against Indiana University-Pennsylvania.
Coming off yesterday’s 15-srikeout performance over the likes of Millersville University, Jones fired back on Saturday evening with her fifth shutout of the 2008 season in nearly as dominating fashion. Tonight’s performance included limited the Hawks to only two hits while striking out 13 batters and walking none.
Jones received all the offensive support she would need as PBA pushed across a pair of runs in the third inning while adding in four more runs in the fourth inning to put the game away for good as Jones continued to mow down the IUP order.
PBA’s second inning pair of runs came after freshman shortstop Caitlin Bouschet (Lake Worth, Fla.) connected for a sharp two-run single down the left-field line to score both Casey Gibson (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Katie Medder (Miami, Fla.).
The four run outburst in the fourth inning was highlighted by a run-scoring single from right-fielder Becca Bolinger (Upland, Ind.) and a two-run double from the other corner-outfielder, left-fielder Chelsea Gravini (Orlando, Fla.).
Medder led the way for the Sailfish with two of the team’s six hits while also stealing three more bases, giving her six steals combined in the two game’s on Saturday.
Palm Beach Atlantic’s season record now stands at 20-16 while they have now won four in a row and eight of their last nine ballgames. They will look to stay perfect in the Barry Tournament tomorrow evening as they play at 5:30 and 7:30 including a nightcap showdown with rival Nova Southeastern University.
