MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- Desperatly needing a big hit, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team turned to reserve Sarah Bronson and she responded with a game-winning single to left-field to cap a 1-0 victory over Millersville University in the second game of the Barry University Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Matching each other nearly pitch for pitch, PBA’s Ashley Jones (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and Millersville’s Emilly Fleiger engaged in a classic pitching dual for six plus innings before the Sailfish finally cracked the armor of Fleiger for their only run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Jones completed the shutout by allowing only three hits on the afternoon while totaling an amazing 15 strikeouts. Fleiger registered only one strikeout but allowed just the one run and only five hits.
Deadlocked at zero entering the seventh inning, the game-ending rally for PBA began when freshman Caitlin Bouschet (Lake Worth, Fla.) connected for a one-out single down the left-field line followed by another single from third-baseman Dani Perrotti (Orlando, Fla.) to put the Sailfish in business.
Freshman Meaghan Ireland (Galloway, N.J.) would make it three consecutive hits with another single as head coach Kimmy Bloemers played it safe by holding the runners.
After Candace Horton was retired on a pop-out for out number two, Bronson stepped into the batter’s box. She would follow with a “long” single that was nearly a grand slam that not only gave the Sailfish a much-deserved victory but also earned Bronson her first walk-off hit of her collegiate career.
Now 18-16, PBA will return to action tomorrow with another pair of games at the Barry Tournament followed by two more games on Sunday.
