MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- Traveling to the campus of Barry University for their fourth tournament of the spring, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team got things started in grand fashion by completing a come-from-behind victory over Southern Connecticut State University on Friday afternoon by a score of 5-3.

Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the previously quiet Sailfish offense erupted with four runs to essentially close out the victory.

The Fish once again got the scoring started early by taking a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. A leadoff single from Becca Bolinger (Upland, Ind.) started the run-scoring rally and was moved up on the bases after a Casey Gibson (Cape Coral, Fla.) sacrifice bunt. Bolinger would come around to score when a Caitlin Bouschet (Lake Worth, Fla.) grounder was mishandled by the SCSU defense.

The remainder of the game would feature very few rallies by either team as the Fish clung to their 1-0 lead entering the sixth inning. That would all change however as SCSC connected for two runs in the top-half of the sixth inning to take a brief lead, leaving the Sailfish in a 2-1 hole.

PBA’s big inning was helped in large part to three errors by the SCSU defense while only connecting for one hit. That hit came from the bat of Bolinger who delivered a two-run single up the middle to give PBA the lead for good.

SCSU attempted a comeback of their own in the top of the seventh inning and added in a run to cut the score to 5-3 but that would be as far as things would get as freshman Heather Laird (Venice, Fla.) closed out the game in relief for the win.

Senior Andrea Fugate (Lake Wales, Fla.) earned the starting nod in the pitching circle but was sidelined after 1 2/3 innings with a stomach ailement. Laird stepped up after a rough outing earlier in the week and came through huge for PBA with 5 1/3 innings of relief while allowing just three hits and three runs (one earned) while also notching three strikeouts.
