WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After a tough 4-3 setback in the opener, the Lynn University softball team fought back for a convincing 10-2 win in the night-cap to earn a split with Palm Beach Atlantic University on Wednesday evening.
While they scored in only two innings, the Fighting Knights put together two very solid run-scoring innings with four runs in the first inning followed by six more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Heather Laird, one of PBA’s promising young right-handed pitchers, took the loss for the Fish (5-6) as she struggled both with her command and some inconsistent defensive support by her teammates. After three innings of work, Laird’s line read four hits, four runs allowed (three earned), four walks, and only one strikeout.
Senior Andrea Fugate (Lake Wales, Fla.), returning to the Sailfish after a 10-day absence on a university trip to China, completed the final three innings of action and was tagged for six runs with only three earned while allowing just two hits.
Junior Rebecca Bolinger (Upland, Ind.) and sophomore Candace Horton (Orlando, Fla.) paced the Sailfish eight-hit attack with two hits apiece. Sophomore Chelsea Gravini (Orlando, Fla.) delivered her second homerun of the season in the first inning while Dani Perrotti (Orlando, Fla.) capped the scoring for PBA in the third inning with an RBI double.
PBA returns to action this weekend when they take part in the Barry University Tournament beginning Friday, March 14th. The Fish will also play in Miami Lakes, Florida on Saturday and Sunday.
