PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- The Sailfish softball team earned a 2-0 win over Nova Southeastern University on Wednesday evening before lightning preceded heavy rain that washed out the remainder of the double-header. With five innings complete in game one the ‘Fish improve to 14-2 on the season.
Sophomore right-hander Amber Johnson (Win, 7-1) earned the victory in the circle for Palm Beach Atlantic and was impressive in tossing five shutout innings and allowing just one Sharks (10-9) hit. She struck out three and did not walk a batter in five innings of work.
The ‘Fish got on the board in the first inning thanks to a NSU throwing error as Lindsey Johnson stole second-base all the while Jen Hunter came home to score from third when the throw got away.
PBA added to their lead in the third frame as Camille Benito drove home Hunter on a gapper to left-centerfield as the ‘Fish moved in front 2-0.
The team would have other good offensive chances as they totaled six hits and drew three walks but things would remain at 2-0.
After a lightning delay in the top of the first inning slowed things down initially another lightning delay was required in the top of the sixth inning followed by heavy rain at the Lake Catherine Complex which officially washed out the remainder of the day.
Chelsie Hersey finished 2-for-2 with a hit by pitch in the lineup for PBA while Hunter was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks.
The Sailfish will now rest up for a busy weekend as they will take on four opponents at the Saint Leo University Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
