PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Senior Joel Buchko delivered a ringing walk-off double to score Ethan Perla and finish off an 8-7 come-from-behind victory Wednesday night over Ave Maria from Palm Beach Gardens High School.

After the Sailfish jumped ahead to a 5-2 lead, the Gyrenes came roaring back to take a 7-5 lead into the latter part of the game. With the offense manufacturing a run in the seventh to tie the score, the table was set for the walk-off in the ninth.

Perla led the inning off with a two-strike single through the right side, and was bunted to second by Chris Farrell. Buchko then wasted no time, lacing the first pitch of the at-bat into left-center field for the victory.

The offense was able to respond after the defense committed two uncharacteristic errors that led to three unearned runs.

PBA’s pitching went the way of the bullpen for tonight’s game, with Robbie Pettet (Win, 1-0) throwing the final two innings to pick up his first victory of the season. Eric Russell, normally a reliever, started the game on the hill and completed four innings while giving up just two earned runs. He handed the ball off to freshman Tyler Scheuer who, after a rocky first inning in which he gave up two runs, settled in nicely for three innings of work. Scheuer would strike out the side in order in the sixth inning.

Along the way, Spencer Castro hit his second home run of the season, and fellow senior Anthony Ortiz went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Perla finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Farrell had a 2-for-4 night with two runs scored. Buchko’s game-winning double gave him a 2-for-4 game with two runs driven in.

The Sailfish travel to Saint Leo over the weekend to take on the Lions in a key region matchup. Friday night’s game is set to start at 6 PM.
