PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team returned to action on Saturday afternoon at the Lake Catherine Complex by taking on the University of Charleston in their only action of the day as part of the Sailfish Showdown Tournament. The Sailfish shook off their only loss of the season on Friday night versus Saint Leo University with a solid 5-2 victory on Saturday against Charleston.
Sophomore Amber Johnson (Win, 5-1) and junior Kayti Lundin (Save, 1) split the pitching duties versus the Golden Eagles as Johnson tallied the first four innings in the pitcher’s circle followed by three from Lundin to close things out.
The ‘Fish continued to swing the bat well on Saturday with seven hits while playing errorless ball in the field as they improved to 8-1 on the season.
Palm Beach Atlantic got on the board in the first inning thanks to a RBI double from Lindsey Johnson that plated fellow sophomore Theresa Butler who had walked earlier in the inning.
The team added three more runs in the third inning with Butler connecting on a run-scoring triple and Camille Benito registering a 2-run double to left-centerfield to put PBA up 4-0.
After UC drew closer with a run in the top of the fourth inning PBA head coach Kimmy Bloemers opted to go with Lundin out of the bullpen for the remainder of the game.
PBA added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an inside-the-park homerun from Chelsie Hersey.
Amber Johnson finished with two hits allowed and one earned run in her four innings of work while Lundin gave up only three hits and one earned run with a walk and a strikeout over the course of three innings. Courtney Fain took the loss for UC as she went the full six innings.
Benito was the only PBA player to register a multi-hit game as she finished 2-for-2 with a walk. Samantha Herndon finished 2-for-3 for the Golden Eagles.
PBA will close out the Sailfish Showdown with two games on Sunday beginning with an 11 am matchup with Flagler (Fla.) College and a 1 pm game versus Goldey Beacom (Del.) College.
