MELBOURNE, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic once again outhit Florida Tech but were unable to produce with runners in scoring position Saturday afternoon, falling 9-1 to FIT at Seminick-Hall Field.
The Sailfish and Panthers were scheduled to play a double-header on the afternoon, but rain washed out the second game. The two squads will meet Sunday afternoon to finish the series with a nine-inning game.
FIT took an early 1-0 lead on starter Ryan Cota (Loss, 1-1), but then erupted for five runs in the third. PBA managed their lone run in the fifth inning thanks to a Patrick Nickler RBI single.
Helping the Sailfish on their way to 11 hits were Nickler, Ethan Perla, Chris Farrell, and Joel Buchko, who all finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Of the hits, only one (a Ryan Drew double) was of the extra base variety.
The Sailfish committed three errors on the afternoon, which led to four unearned runs.
Florida Tech’s starter Scotty Ward threw a complete game gem, scattering those 11 PBA hits while striking out six and not allowing a walk.
Palm Beach Atlantic will return to Melbourne for the finale Sunday afternoon, which is scheduled to start at 3 PM.
