KISSIMMEE, Fla.- In what has been an inconsistent performance at best through four games at the Rebel Spring Games, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team may have finally turned a corner offensively as they put together a 9-0 shellacking over Dowling College on Thursday morning at the Oceola County Sports Complex.
Finally aiding ace right-hander Ashley Jones (Jensen Beach, Fla.) with some excess run support, the Fish pounded out 12 hits over five innings to cap the game with a 9-0 victory which exceeded the tournament eight-run rule as the ball game was called after five innings.
Jones (5-4) once again dominated on the mound as the sophomore limited the Dowling offense to only one hit while striking out nine batters and walking only one batter.
The game started out with a scoreless first for both teams but the Fish didn’t wait long to get on the board as PBA plated their first two runs in the second inning as senior center-fielder Casey Gibson (Cape Coral, Fla.) ripped a triple into the right-centerfield gap followed by Gibson coming around to score on a botched play off the bat of junior Rebecca Bolinger (Upland, Ind.).
After another zero on the scoreboard in the third inning, the Sailfish bats got back at it again in the fourth inning as they crossed the plate three times followed by the deciding four runs in the fifth inning to cap both the scoring and the game.
A two-run single from third-baseman Dani Perrotti (Orlando, Fla.) and a RBI single from shortstop Caitlin Bouschet (Lake Worth, Fla.) plated the three runs in the fourth as PBA opened up a comfortable lead. While doing damage with their bats in the game, both Perrotti and Bouschet provided stellar defense on the left-side of the infield throughout the six-game tournament.
PBA’s game-deciding four run outburst in the fifth inning was highlighted by another RBI single from Perrotti and a bases-clearing double from Chelsea Gravini (Orlando, Fla.) to send both the Sailfish fans and bench into celebration as PBA took the game with a relatively easy 9-0 decision.
